MISTRAL SUP

Paddle guru Steve West is behind Mistral International who is a true credit to our sport. Part of the design team is UK shaper Chris Diplock from Diplock surfboards. Diplock have been designing prototypes in their Cornwall factory. It's great to see a homegrown element to the design of the Mistral boards. Scroll down get info on the range

MISTRAL VORTEX 14'

EQUINOX
One of the most beautiful, purposeful looking performance race boards on the market today. The Vortex is seriously quick and no part of its design is without purpose or reason. Best of all it’s not so unstable that it can only be ridden by gymnasts - it’s forgiving and loves to be paddled hard.
Through living and travelling through the Pacific for over 25 years, intuition and looking outward to the natural world to provide guidance has long been the primary inspiration for outrigger canoes, prone paddle boards and all form of water craft, amongst Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian artisans, as part of a seafaring culture. Dolphins aren’t shaped the way they are for no good reason and as over-used as it may sound, form will always follow function.
From the outset the brief was simple - as fast and as stable as possible. Clean entry and clean exit lines are essential for efficient hydro-dynamics. Using a sturgeon nose principal of creating a bow wave which is thrown backward not forward and an underwater section which encourages water to wrap and disperse quickly and cleanly, the Vortex creates one of the cleanest bow waves you will every see and experience.
Paddling this board is not as challenging as you might imagine.
Lowered standing area improves control and the secondary buoyancy is reached very quickly preventing dramatic rolling.
With wins in it’s first two major races in the UK, the River Dart and Battle of the Thames London, the National UK SUP Series, The 11 Cities five day event in both the men's and women's divisions, the board has quickly risen to the fore of paddlers minds as a force to be reckoned with - in every sense a world class design.

MISTRAL EQUINOX 14'

The Equinox takes it's name from the change of season which tends to bring strong winds to certain parts of the world. Rough water paddling demands a very different board shape. You need added volume and a very different approach to the designing of the nose area and a blend of semi-displacement and flatter planning areas. You want a board which can punch upwind and when turned downwind, will catch and chase bumps with ease.
When the winds pick up and you want a board design which can cope with all the action of moving water, you want a design that works with the water around it, not against it. The board is designed to blend beautifully with the nuances of rougher waters. The added volume keeps you moving without stalling, the rounded nose keeps the ride smooth at all times and water run off is super smooth and clean. There’s no sharp edges, which means there are no nasty surprises, making the board highly predictable. Not just quick on rougher waters, it’s quick over flatter waters.
Downwind, this board is fast and responsive. Upwind it’s comfortable in handling chop and makes the perfect racing board over waters which demand more of both paddler and board

MISTRAL SLIPSTREAM 12'6

The Slipstream is without doubt, one of the smoothest and easiest 12'6 boards on the market to paddle - and it's quick.
It has already won races in the USA, including the 30 mile plus Chatterjack race in the hands of our team rider Seychelle.
12’6’ boards are the domain of technical performance, where there are very mixed demands placed on the board to perform in flat water, through shore break and to make hard turns under control. We’ve set out to combine and take these factors into consideration. Not for 'heavy' paddlers, the 12'6 board performs best for light to medium weight riders. Favoured by many women and lighter weight men, the 12'6 can often be a faster option than a 14' board, given certain strength to weight considerations, where their is less board to have to 'muscle' over the water.
The bow and combined displaced hull area, give this board and its longer sister board the Vortex, the same reversed bow wake, which is minimal and in typical torpedo fashion, the bow is designed to 'split' the water and create a pressure wave, which forms a form of vacuum area, so as the drag is highly reduced. Unlike many designs, where you may experience 'diminished return on output', on this board design, the more you put in, the more you get out. Another strong feature of this board, is that the 'sweet-spot' in which the paddle can stand to trim the board in differing circumstances, are many and varied all due to the clever design and consistency of volume
